Fathers have a vital role in the lives of their children, and consequently, one essential role of the father is to provide nourishment to their children, in support of their health and well-being. Beginning at birth, a breastfeeding mother may be the primary provider of sustenance, however fathers can support this important effort, and be an integral part of mom’s breastfeeding support network.
Father’s can help mothers sustain breastfeeding by doing a few key things:
- Attending breastfeeding education opportunities with mom, or reading materials on breastfeeding to learn more about the health, emotional, financial and environmental benefits of breastfeeding.
- Give mom encouragement if she finds herself suffering from any complications of breastfeeding like, discomfort, mastitis*, low milk supply, thrush* or any other health conditions that could hinder breastfeeding.
- Feeding baby breast milk in a bottle on occasion: This is a great way for dad to bond with baby, skin-to-skin* during feedings, and give mommy a respite from nursing 24/7.
- Helping with household duties: This needs no explanation,..I hope.
The more that both parents can feel connected to parenting their little bundle of joy, the more they may enjoy the experiences of parenthood, and flourish as a family for the long haul, and breastfeeding support is a part of the equation. So fathers, keep up the great work! Your family will forever benefit from your loving care, nuturing, and protection!
Stay Healthy and Wise!
Sincerely,
Ericka L. Abrams, Public Health Practitioner
